DEI 106 - Recognizing and Interrupting Ableism in IDD Provider Settings
This session explores how ableism shows up in everyday language, documentation, and decision‑making within IDD provider settings. Participants will learn to identify ableist attitudes and assumptions, understand the three levels of ableism (individual, institutional, and structural), and apply practical strategies to interrupt these patterns in their daily work. Drawing on findings from a 2024 CQL study, this training highlights what disability professionals often think they know about ableism and where the most common gaps appear.
Learning Objectives:
· Define ableism and understand how it differs from intentional discrimination
· Recognize the three levels of ableism
· Identify ableist language, attitudes, and behaviors in IDD settings
· Understand key findings from recent CQL research
· Apply concrete strategies to recognize and interrupt ableism in practice
We encourage you to be part of this important conversation and join the movement toward a more equitable and just society.
